About The Researcher

My name is Cristy Rodriguez-Rivas. I am a fourth-year student at California State University Channel Islands double majoring in Communication and Performing Arts. I have been a Star Wars fan my whole entire life. Star Wars is a family thing that was passed down from my dad to my brothers and me. Dad was around 7 years old when Star Wars came out and fell in love from the first yellow-text opening crawl in 1977. He shared his passion for the movies with the whole family. I remember going to go see the prequels as a grade-school kid in the 2000s. (Yes, I actually liked Jar Jar Binks back then.) We’ve since been going to Star Wars celebrations, visiting Disneyland and Disney World just to ride Star Tours, going to movie premieres, playing with lightsabers, watching all the Star Wars TV shows, and reading every Star Wars book and novel we can get our hands on.

About The Project

Project May The Fourth is an independent research project that I am conducting as part of my studies at CSU Channel Islands. It is a qualitative style research project that asks how Star Wars fans communicate about their feelings towards the music of Star Wars. We will be looking at the music of John Williams and Michael Giacchino. In our online format, participants will participate in a survey where you will be asked to listen to a sample of music and then respond to each piece.

This research project is born from my love of Star Wars, my passion for music, and an innate curiosity about the impact this little movie franchise has had on others. My project comes in three parts, the first being this collection of data, the second being my analysis and paper, and the third being my presentation. When research is found, it is crucial to be able to share and present findings to the scientific community. I plan to present the findings of this research to various conferences and to Arts Under The Stars. Arts Under The Stars is an Instructionally Related Activities funded Performing Arts showcase at CSU Channel Islands. Arts Under the Stars takes research from all disciplines on our campus and presents them in an original multi-media performance. My intention is to present my research to them and work with a choreographer to turn the findings of this research project into a moving work of art.
